Chapter Ten

Detective Douglas rapped on Robert Swayze's hotel door. "Wait a minute", radiated from the room. As Robert peered through the peephole, he said, "Oh, it's you again."

Robert opened the door and stepped back into the room to let Detective Douglas inside. Sgt. Ryan followed him and shut the door. As he smelt the air, he picked up the same fragrance as before. "Did you have a woman visit you?"

"No, just the cleaning lady."

Sgt. Ryan cocked his head to the side and look at him. "She wears a very distinct perfume. Most hotels don't allow their cleaning crew to wear any fragrances at all."

"Well apparently either this one does." Robert grinned, and added, "Or maybe the girl's a bit of a rebel."

Detective Douglas stepped between them. "The reason that we came here tonight is to ask you about last Saturday."

"I thought I answered all your questions?"

"Well apparently we missed a few questions."

"Like what?"

The detective smacked his lips. "Well, first of all, who were you arguing with outside of the book store?"

Robert's mouth cracked open and it took him a few seconds to respond. "I had a heated conversation with one of the locals about Simon's book signing. Despite bringing a lot of outside money into the town, it seemed that no one in that stupid little village wanted it."

"Who was he?"

"How would I know? I never met him before."

"So, what were you arguing about?"

Robert glanced at the wall and then back at the detective. "Somehow, he knew who I was. He knew that I was Simon Black's agent and even called me by my name."

The sergeant butting in. "Are you sure that he didn't overhear you mentioning it? He could have been standing behind you while you were talking to someone."

Detective Douglas spoke up. "Maybe he got it from the internet. Your name must be listed somewhere in connection with Simon Black's. Maybe on a client list to attract new clients."

Robert thought for a moment. "Maybe, but that would require a little research. You saw the people that live in that town. Do you think they are up to doing that kind of research."

"They may be odd, but they are not dumb. I'm not even sure what they are truly capable of."

Robert looked at the detective. "That man wasn't tech savvy in the least. You should have seen the way he looked at me when I got a text message. He was utterly terrified of my phone. I honestly don't know why he objected so adamantly to Simon being in town."

Detective Douglas looked at Robert and studied his open arms and semi-confused manner. Believing he was telling the truth, he asked, "So how did it end."

"By him yelling, 'this is not over', and storming off."

"Do you think that he could have later confronted Simon and in a moment of rage, killed him?"

Robert shook his head and released a barely audible snort. "The guy was crazy. After he left, I even had a good chuckle. He was frightened of his own shadow, and obviously quite harmless.
